Earlier, in 2009-10, vehicle registration
had touched 201,787 units. The registration had declined in 2010-11 after the
hike in excise duty and auto loan by bank and financial institutions. As per
the department officials, the sales started to pick up slowly from 2011-12
after one year gap of slowdown in auto market.
The department officials and automobile
dealers attribute the record registration to the increased bank financing
facilities, lower interest rate, growth in sales of mainly two wheelers,
increased buying capacity of customers, remittance inflow and rebound in
housing business. All segments of vehicles have witnessed growth in
registration in the last fiscal year.
With growth in all segments of vehicles,
the registration went up by 22 percent compared to 170,084 units of the
previous fiscal 2011-12. The department record shows that a total of 9,595
passenger cars have been registered by the government during last year, the
number is up by 10 percent compared to 8,711 units previous year
Similarly, a total of 175,381 units of
motorbikes were registered, which is up by 21 percent compared to precious
year. The bike registration constitutes 84 percent in the total vehicles
registered during the last fiscal year.
Devi Ram Bhandari, director at the
department said that the bike had become a necessity for each middle class
family living in the urban areas as it is a convent and cheaper vehicle option.
“Bike sales have been increasing for growth in demand from rural market and if
you see demand for scooters among females is also increasing,” he added.
Automobile dealers said that even as there
was growth in bike and low end vehicles, sales of high end luxury vehicles was
still poor. Saurav Jyoti immediate past president of the Nepal Automobile
Dealers Associations said that there was overall growth in sales by around 30
percent. “Even as there is growth in sales, demand for high end luxury vehicles
has come down to around 60-70 percent for the heavy excise duty and impact of
dollar appreciation,” he added.
During the last fiscal year, the department
registered 3,332 units of heavy equipments (excavator, crane and dozer), 3,263
buses, 1,328 mini bus/mini truck, 9,795 tractor/power trailer and 5,422 pick up
vans. The department registers vehicles reaching domestic market from its 13
zonel offices.

Dhaulagiri, Lumbini, Veri and Mahakali Zones, where as registration in four
