NTA prepares to issue MVNO permit

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) is preparing to issue a license of mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). The regulator has said that the permit was being open with a target to expand mobile service in areas where the service has not reached, diversify the telecommunications services being provided and provide enhanced quality of service to customers.

MVNO is a concept of a company that can diversify telecom services using the network and infrastructure of mobile operators. Digambar Jha, chairman of NTA said that the permit will be issued with a focus to virtual marketing. “We are issuing MVNO license based on which a licensee will take business from service providers,” he said. “There will be no role of NTA in between if a telecom company refuse to provide business to MVNO. They will be working together only based on policy and instruction.”

It has been said that the MVNO permit will be issued with a target to market services of six telecom companies of the country. NTA has already prepared a draft guideline to issue the MVNO license. The major responsibility of MVNO is to expand new and package service to a specific area based on the agreement reached between telecom company and MVNO.

NTA will be able to terminate the permit or take action if MVNO fails to perform based on the terms of condition agreed. According to Min Prasad Aryal, spokesperson of NTA, after agreement with telecom companies, MVNO will be able to expand telecom companies’ services with their own brand names. He said that NTA will recommend the draft to the government and after the introduction of the draft as a guideline, they will soon issue MVNO permit.
